The comment box is is the first link directly under the blog post -- for example on this post it will now say "3 comments" which does not sound like an invitation to make a comment, does it? Sounds more like it's inviting you to read already posted comments, right? Last time I checked I could not change this in blogger -- but I'll check again.

I must admit though, I find commenting on blogs generally a pain in the butt.

Your questions about posting to Twitter is a complete mystery to me -- I am also a bad tweeter. I want to ask about the secret security numbers that some sites ask you to type in ... Facebook included. Is there any way of accessing these numbers when an audio option isn't offered? Secondly, when posting from a blog post to Twitter, Voiceover insists on reading the numbers as they count down instead of reading the typed words, and the programme is completely unusable until the countdown ends. Have you solved this problem? Third, I want to say that I enjoy your blog posts and wish you were more prolific. Your archives suggest that you have posted more regularly in the past, and I enjoy the freshness of new posts rather than searching labels for old posts that interest me. I look forward to hearing whether you can solve my social networking issues!Leanne Hunthttp://diamondpanes.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-356464666966022631.post-14202164725124895462011-10-14T07:53:14.229-04:002011-10-14T07:53:14.229-04:00I am a Voiceover user and I follow your blog. I also believe that assistive technolgy is not within the reach of everyone, it is mostly very expensive and not very easy to use. That is why through out my life I have relied on my own creativity to find out new ways of using things around meand making them useful for my personal needs. Would you believe that right now I am using a PC with Windows Xp without anything like Zoomtext or other software and I am very much capable to use computer without spending a single penny on assistive technology. As a legally blind person with my central vision totally gone, I have no problem using a standrad PC with some accessibility settings. How I do it, I can share this info with anyone who may be interested.

Regards

Azhar Karim
karim1957@hotmail.comAzhar Karimhttp://www.edufire.com/azharnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-356464666966022631.post-83442601137665544452010-08-11T12:21:41.250-04:002010-08-11T12:21:41.250-04:00It's a very lovely article.

Great blog, great topics, and great wr...Hi Dorrie,

Great blog, great topics, and great writing. It’s gratifying to hear you say you know only 1 person who uses speech in and out on a daily basis. I'm an access technology professional, and one of my roles is computer access evaluations.

I hear a lot from people who are blind or low vision who are excited to use speech input. However, my experience is similar to yours. Speech recognition is extremely difficult and cumbersome to learn and use, especially if you are blind. I find that many people mistakenly believe speech input is "the" solution, and only after spending a lot of money and countless hours do they come to realize that it is not the solution they were hoping for. Don't get me wrong, I think Guide-Handsfree, J-Say, and similar solutions are fantastic programs, and have come a long way. They are a godsend for those who also have mobility issues where keyboarding is not an option.

The problem, I believe, are people’s expectations of what computers can do. That is, it’s not that speech recognition is not good enough; but that computers are not human enough. Computers cannot infer or guess what we mean. They cannot know the difference between “a lite beer” and “a light bear”. It requires taking context into account, as well as tone, infection, content, etc. The way a human brain comprehends speech is seemingly impossibly complex. Yet a computer, no matter how powerful, is still a computer, bottom-up, and logical. As you know, when you give the computer a command, you have to use the right words in the right order. And learning all these commands can end up being more difficult to learn than touch-typing.

I hope you are right that one day we can carry on a conversation with a computer just like we talk amongst are selves, but I personally think it will be a long time. And until then, learning how to touch-type is truly one of the most essential skills there are for those who are mouse-less. Just my “to sense” :)

Cheers,
Mark Stimson, Ph.D. (the Ph.D. is in Applied Cognitive Psychology)
marks@accessingenuity.comUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13412487080177292236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-356464666966022631.post-15720479927110609162010-06-08T16:29:59.091-04:002010-06-08T16:29:59.091-04:00HI

When verizon came out with their first Accessible phone, the Motorola Q 9c, I got it the first month it was released, hoping to have better luck with Talks for Verizon Wireless then I had with other phones.

After first recieving the Motorola Q9c, I had nothing but trouble with it. I couldn't do text messaging at all, the voice was very lagged and the phone itself froze on me pretty much constantly.

7 months before my 2 year contract was up, I finally talked to verizon and I said look, I've had this crappy phone for 16 months now, can I please get a different phone? At first, they were going to send me the HTC Ozone, which is the same as the Motorola Q9c but an updated version. I didn't want to do that because most of my issues with talks for verizon had to do with the smartphone itself and not the talks software, so I said no I don't want another crappy smartphone that I would fuss with endlessly.

my first recommendation was to switch to AT&T and get an iphone, but I still had 7 more months until my contract is up, and I am not reluctant to give up my FREE nights and weekends, plus FREE verizon to verizon, and now on top of that I have verizon's unlimited talk and text, so I defintely don't want to give that up!

so I was like ok, which phone do I pick then?
A friend of mine who is legally blind also, has the LG Env 3, and he likes it a great deal. He says its got talking caller ID, and speaks your text messages to you with the simple press of the space bar, so I talked to LG since verizon wireless didn't know about that feature, and LG said the LG Env Touch has those same features as the Env3, so today I ordered the LG Env Touch, which I am hoping was a good decision to make on this...

but the Motorola Q9c and the HTC Ozone that verzion wireless sells that they say are their "accessible" phones? believe me there NOT! I've had numerous problems with Windows Mobile smartphones anyways, because there like little computers, they freeze on you all the time, when you type in a text message what takes you 2 minutes to type on the keyboard takes 35 minutes to display on the screen (very much lagged) and you have to keep rebooting the phone to get that behavior to stop, just like an old computer or something, so I'm hoping I have better luck with the LG Env series...Tom Coburnhttp://www.tcoburn.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-356464666966022631.post-67702281150053004102010-06-03T17:53:23.633-04:002010-06-03T17:53:23.633-04:00The thing that bothers me about the reCAPTCHA proj...The thing that bothers me about the reCAPTCHA project, specifically, is the audio version doesn't match up with what is supposed to be typed inside the input box. The visual version is a word of some sort, and the input box expects those two words to be typed in. When you listen to the audio version, its just a bunch of random numbers, and if you try to type in those random numbers, recaptcha says its not the correct word.

I find that to be the case with most captcha's out there. The speech is nice and clear, yes, but the learning curve involved with using voice-over without the devices usual jestures has been extremely challenging for me. I find myself quickly turning on and off "voice over" just to use the device frequently, and thats for a person with a little bit of vision, near total but not quite. I can't imagine using "voice over" without any vision at all, I wouldn't be able to do it, even as technical as I am.

Clicking on icons is about the only useful thing I can do with voice-over. You can't type with voice over very good because you have to double-click very quickly to get a key to select, which is a very slow process and I can't always get to function very well, so I am not a fan of voice-over at all for the iphone / itouch. the speech synthesizer is good yes, but not the guestures, or lack there of when voice-over is enabled.Tom Coburnhttp://www.tcoburn.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-356464666966022631.post-29475757612962821382010-06-01T16:00:48.789-04:002010-06-01T16:00:48.789-04:00I tried the google captcha over the weekend, and b...I tried the google captcha over the weekend, and boy was it frustrating!
